Flex Rates give you the very best available price for the motorhome you want to rent. If you book early and there are plenty of motorhomes available, you will pay a much lower price. If you book closer to departure date or book for a high demand period then the rate will be higher.
However, once booked, should you need to amend the dates, the prevailing rates will apply. We get advised of new flex rates each week. Therefore each quote only valid until the end of each week.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)
GST is a New Zealand Government imposed tax. GST is included in all Maui rates and is currently 15%. Maui reserves the right to amend GST upon Government intervention.

Cutlery & Cooking Utensils, China Crockery - Plates, Bowls, Cups, Wine Glasses, Bottle/Can Opener, Mixing Bowls, Colander, Saucepans & Frying Pan, Chopping Board, Electric Jug, Gas Kettle, Electric Toaster, Coffee Plunger, Microwave Storage Containers & Tea Towel.

Freshly laundered Linen and bedding includes:
includes pillow, pillowcase, sheet and towel per person plus one duvet (doona) per bed. maui customers may also exchange their linen and bedding during their rental at any maui branch.

Maui Inclusive Pack:
The Maui Inclusive Pack is NZD $58 per day (maximum 50 days / NZD $2,900 per rental) and is payable in addition to the daily gross rental rate.

* Liability Reduction Option - This option reduces the excess from NZD $7500 to NIL.

** Linen Exchange Service - This service is included in the Inclusive Pack and The Bundle. This allows you to stop into the closest branch during your hire and swap your linen (pillow, pillowcase, duvet (doona), sheets, towels, and bath mat) over for a fresh, clean set. Please notify the branch ahead of time as this will ensure the items are available and ready for you when you arrive.

Road User Charge Recovery Fee (RUCRF)
The Road User Charge Recovery Fee is payable on diesel vehicles upon vehicle return. The Road User Charge Recovery Fee is included in the Express Return Pack. If the Express Return Pack is not selected, the Road User Charge Recovery Fee will be calculated and collated on return of the campervan based on the kilometres travelled during the hire.

The vehicle rates per 100km are as follows:

Ultima / Ultima Plus / Cascade NZD $7.24
Beach / River NZD $7.64

Maui reserves the right to amend the Road User Charge Recovery Fee upon Government intervention.

For Your Protection - Vehicles Liability:
New Zealand legislation provides limited coverage for personal injury. maui does not accept any liability for personal injuries sustained during the rental and recommend the hirer does not leave valuables in the vehicle and that they have personal travel insurance to cover for the loss/damage of personal belongings. maui strongly recommends that all people travelling in New Zealand take out personal travel insurance.

# In the USA a liability is referred to as the deductible.

All vehicles are insured for the damage to the vehicle or to the property of a Third Party. The hirer is responsible for the first NZD $7,500 (the liability) of the cost of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident (does not include single vehicle roll over), windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break-in or vandalism with the exception of the "exclusions". This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is being repaired. In addition to these costs, an administration fee of NZD $60 may apply, per claim.

The liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of the rental. maui reserves the right to charge the hirer for any vehicle damage including Third Party property damage not reported on return of the vehicle. The liability will be refunded if maui is successful in recovering the cost of the damages from the Third Party. Please note that Third Party claims can take months to resolve.

The liability applies in respect of each claim, not rental.

Please see the ‘exclusions’ section below, whereby all liability cover will be made void.

Liability Reduction Option:
Cost per day NZD $46 (max charge NZD $2,300) - Liability reduced to NIL

When the Liability Reduction Option has been purchased, the hirer will not have to pay any liability at all for any damage to the vehicle or property of a Third Party with the exception of the ‘exclusions’. This cover includes unlimited tyres and windscreens, Overhead and Underbody damage to the vehicle plus Single Vehicle accident (excludes single vehicle rollover).

Note: The Liability Reduction Option is included in the Maui Inclusive Pack.

All liability cover will be made void if any of the following ‘Exclusions’ are breached:

  • (a) any Damage caused by wilful misconduct (e.g. sitting or standing on the bonnet or roof of the Vehicle), or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or negligence;
  • (b) any Damage where the Customer is charged by local authorities for being careless, showing gross negligence or wilfulness in failing to abide by the local road rules;
  • (c) retrieving or recovering a Vehicle, which may include, but is not limited to a Vehicle that has become bogged, submerged, caught, trapped, stuck or restricted in any way and/or has been abandoned, in each case in circumstances within the control of the Customer;
  • (d) replacing keys, which have been lost, damaged or stolen, or retrieving keys which have been locked in the Vehicle;
  • (e) any overhead or underbody damage to the Vehicle however caused, except where the Liability Reduction Option or the maui Inclusive Pack is taken.
  • (f) any single Vehicle rollover except where The Bundle (in conjunction with the Liability Reduction Option) or the maui Inclusive Pack has been purchased;
  • (g) Damage caused to the Vehicle because total load (kg) has exceeded recommended load as stated in the Vehicle manual;
  • (h) Damage caused by drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or drivers that have a licence that has been cancelled or suspended and/or drivers who have a licence that is classified as a learner or probationary licence;
  • (i) any Damage caused to the Vehicle due to the incorrect use of snow chains; and
  • (j) any Damage associated with the incorrect use of fuel (fuel being diesel or petrol), which includes Biofuel which should not be used, or water or other contamination of fuel.

Vehicle Security Deposit:
Upon vehicle collection, a vehicle security deposit is required. The vehicle security deposit is applicable regardless if the hirer has purchased private travel insurance.

For security purposes, only a credit card can be used to provide a vehicle security deposit. The credit card holder must be present and able to sign for the vehicle security deposit upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle. Any type of pre-paid travel card is not acceptable as a means to provide a vehicle security deposit. Visa and MasterCard debit cards are acceptable provided the card is being used as a credit card.

Debited vehicle security deposits are subject to a 3.1% credit card administration fee in addition to the vehicle security deposit amount when the credit card used is either a Visa or MasterCard and 5.4%, when the credit card used is American Express.

If the Liability Reduction Option is not selected, the vehicle security deposit is NZD $7,500 payable by credit card.

The NZD $7,500 is debited to the hirer's credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer's daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.

If the Liability Reduction Option is selected or the package booked is the maui Premium Package the vehicle security deposit is NZD $250.

The NZD $250 is taken as an imprint to the hirer's credit card when the vehicle is collected. An imprint simply records a figure against the hirer's credit card of NZD $250 that Maui can then debit if required.

The vehicle security deposit is fully refundable, including the credit card surcharge if the card used to provide the vehicle security deposit is a Visa or MasterCard, provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged, in a clean condition and with full fuel tanks (fuel being petrol or diesel) and gas bottle. Except where the customer has purchased PGO (PGO is included in the Maui Premium Package) and/or Pre Purchase Fuel (PPF), failure to return the vehicle with full petrol or diesel tanks and/or a full LPG bottle will result in refill charges, which will be advised upon return of the vehicle.

Maui reserves the right to retain a NZD $250 cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned in a clean condition. This includes smoking related cleaning, as smoking is not permitted in the vehicle. The toilet and waste water tank must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional NZD $125 soiling fee will be retained.


Exchange Rate / Currency Variations:
All credit and debit transactions are conducted in Australian dollars. Due to exchange rate fluctuations and bank fees, there could be some variance between the amount initially debited against the Customer's credit or debit card and the amount refunded. Maui accept no liability for any such variation or any interest incurred on such amounts.

Credit Cards:
The credit or debit card holder will be jointly and severally liable as a customer. Accepted credit and debit cards are Visa Card, MasterCard and American Express. A non-refundable 3.1% administration fee will apply to all Visa and MasterCard transactions and 5.4% to American Express. Credit card administration fees also apply to debited vehicle security deposits and only the hirer's credit card is acceptable to use for the purpose of the vehicle security deposit.

Credit Card Authority:
The Customer expressly and irrevocably authorises maui to charge to the Credit Card all amounts payable under this Agreement. By way of summary, these charges include, but are not limited to any costs or fines arising under (Delivery and return of the Vehicle), (Late drop-offs), (Rental extension), (Use of the vehicle), (On-road assistance), (Vehicle Damage), (Toll and Trafic Charges), and (Terminating the agreement and repossessing the vehicle). maui will provide the Customer with an itemised bill of the monies to be deducted by maui from the Credit Card prior to making such deductions.

Personal & Company Cheques:
Personal cheques, company cheques and bank transfers will not be accepted as payment for rental charges at the time of pick up. These must be received by Maui 28 days prior to commencement of rental. Personal cheques, company cheques or bank transfers are not acceptable as the Liability Deposit and a valid credit card will need to be provided for the Liability Deposit as per the Credit Card Authority section.

Drivers Licence:
A current and full motor vehicle driver’s licence is required and must be produced upon vehicle collection. If your license is in a language other than English it must be accompanied by a current international driving permit issued in the same country as the driver’s licence was issued. An accredited English translation will be accepted in lieu of an international driving permit.

Age Restrictions:
Drivers must be 21 years of age or over.

* Maui also offers bikes for hire. You can choose between Hybrid and Moutain Bikes, offered by their partner Natural High. Bikes can only be hired in conjunction with bike racks.. Bike racks can hold a maximum of 2 bikes.

Bikes and bike racks must be requested with your booking, but are payable locally. The following fees apply:

- Bikes: NZD $16 per day per bike

Bike hire available for "Elite models" and for all Cascade models.

The Bundle - Equipment Package:
Equipment package (The Bundle) which is NZD $12 per day (maximum NZD $600 per rental), includes the following extras:

- WiFi including 1GB data (per hire not per day).

- Baby / booster seat (on request and if booked in advance)
- Single Vehicle Rollover Cover (only when purchased with Liability Reduction Option)

Please note: the Single Vehicle Rollover cover included in The Bundle is only available in conjunction with the purchase of the Liability Reduction Option. All other items in The Bundle are available whether you have purchased the Liability Reduction Option or not.

Express Return Option:
- NZD $339 per rental (up to 15 days)
- NZD $445 per rental (16 - 24 days)
- NZD $535 per rental (25 days and over)

It includes the following:
- First LP gas fill (you can return the gas bottle empty)
- A full tank of petrol / diesel (you can return the vehicle with the fuel tank empty)

* If you have booked the All Inclusive option or Liabilty Reduction option, you may simply return your keys to the counter when returning the vehicle without any need to do vehicle checks. This service only applies where no vehicle damage has occurred while on hire.

Baby / Booster Seats:
All children aged under seven years must travel in an approved child restraint.

  • Children aged from birth to approximately four years (birth-18kg) should use a child seat
  • Children aged between four and seven years (15-36kg) should use a booster seat
  • All child restraints must comply with the standards approved in New Zealand. We strongly recommend child restraints are pre booked


  • Front seats in all vehicles are not fitted with anchor points and cannot accommodate children under seven years in any case. Child or booster seats are not permitted in the rear facing seats of any six berth vehicle.
  • We recommend that children are kept rear facing until approximately two years of age.

Maui Elite Option:
Guarantee a Maui Ultima, Ultima Plus, Cascade, Beach or River less than 1 year old at time of pick up, for just an extra NZD $39 per day.

Rental Duration:
Rental days are calculated on a calendar day basis. When calculating the number of days the Vehicle is rented, the day of pick-up is counted as day one of the rental, regardless of pick-up time. The day of the Vehicle's return is counted as the final day of the rental regardless of drop-off time.

  • Minimum rental periods are subject to change, and any such change will be notified to you prior to booking confirmation.
  • Minimum rental period for one-way rentals vary depending on the locations and this is advised at time of booking.
  • Late pick-up or early return of the Vehicle does not entitle the Customer to any refund of the unused portion of the rental.

Road Restrictions:
Maui Vehicles can only be driven on sealed / bitumen or well-maintained roads. The only exception to this is reasonable use of access roads limited to a maximum of twelve kilometres in length to recognised campgrounds and major tourist attractions;

and Vehicles are not permitted on Skippers Road (Queenstown), the Crown Range Road (Queenstown), Ball Hut Road (Mt. Cook), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), North of Colville Township (Coromandel Peninsula) and all ski field access roads (from 01 June to 31 October).
The Customer is responsible for all damage if travelling on these roads.

We value your well being, and for safety purposes, Maui reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to restrict Vehicle movements in certain areas due to:
(a) adverse road or weather conditions;
(b) the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period; and
(c) any concerns Maui, its employees or agents may have regarding driver experience or ability.

Maui will advise you on pick-up of any travel restrictions known at that time. We strongly recommend that you check for current road restrictions and closures during your rental by visiting the New Zealand Transport Authority's website at www.nzta.govt.nz.

Change Of Drop-Off Destination:
If the customer wishes to change the drop-off destination, they must first obtain authorisation from Reservations (0800 651 080). Subject to the change being approved, an additional charge of up to NZD $750 may apply.

Multiple Rentals:
Should a Customer have more than one rental, the bookings can be combined to qualify for longer-term hire discounts off the daily Vehicle rates. Consecutive motorhome hire in South Africa for maui and Britz; and in Australia and New Zealand for maui, Britz and Mighty can be combined to qualify if travel is within a 3-month period.

One-Way Rentals:
One-Way rentals are available between all branch locations.

  • Where pick up originates from Auckland and returns to Christchurch or Queenstown,
    where pick up is between 1 April and 30 September - A One-Way fee of NZD $150 applies
    where pick up is between 1 October and 31 March - A One-Way fee of NZD $250 applies

  • Where pick up originates from Christchurch to Queenstown or Vice Versa,
    where pick up is between 1 April and 30 September - A One-Way fee of NZD $50 applies
    where pick up is between 1 October and 31 March - A One-Way fee of NZD $75 applies
  • Where pick up originates from Christchurch or Queenstown and returns to Auckland,
    where pick up is between 1 April and 30 September - no fee applies (Free)
    where pick up is between 1 October and 31 March - A One-Way fee of NZD $150 applies

Vehicle Pick-Up:
This takes place at the booked depot and during Maui's opening hours. Please do not arrive any later than 30 minutes before closing time.

Vehicle Return:
You can drop off your vehicle at the booked depot during opening hours but no later than 30 minutes before closing time. If the vehicle is returned earlier than agreed no refunds are possible.

Late Drop Off:
If the Customer wishes to drop-off the Vehicle to a Maui branch after business hours, they must first get approval from Maui by calling 0800 651 080. The Customer will incur an additional fee of NZD $150 per day (in addition to the daily rate being charged) if the Customer fails to obtain such approval from Maui prior to the late drop-off of the Vehicle. This late drop-off fee and the additional rental charges will be charged to the Customer's credit card.

Rental Extension:
If the Customer wishes to extend the rental whilst on hire, they must first obtain authorisation from Maui by calling 0800 651 080. This is subject to availability. The extra cost of an extended rental must be paid by the Customer by credit card on confirmation of the rental extension

If the vehicle is returned damaged or not in a clean state, if the toilet or waste water tanks are not emptied or the petrol or diesel tank is not full (except if the Express Return Option is booked in advance) the rental company will impose the listed fees and additional charges. The cleaning fee is NZD $250 + a further NZD $125 in the case of the waste water or toilet tanks not having been emptied.

Public Holiday Surcharge:
Maui Branches are open 7 days per week (9.00am to 3.30pm) with the following exception:

Maui branches are closed on
- 25 December 2020 - Christmas Day (Closed - applies to all Maui branches);

A surcharge of NZD $100 will apply to all rentals picking up or dropping off on the following dates:
- 10 April 2020 - Good Friday;
- 13 April 2020 - Easter Monday;

- 25 April 2020 - ANZAC Day;
- 01 June 2020 - Queen's Birthday;
- 26 October 2020 - Labour Day;
- 26 December 2020 - Boxing Day;
- 01 January 2021 - New Year's Day;
- 02 January 2021 - Day after New Year's Day;
- 06 February 2021 - Waitangi Day;

Queenstown Location Fees:
An additional location fee of NZD $95 applies to all motorhomes picked up or dropped off in Queenstown (though if the pick up and drop off both occur in Queenstown, only one location fee will apply). This is in addition to the one-way fee if applicable.

Maui provides free airport to branch and branch to airport transfer on day of arrival and departure for our Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown Branches.

Use of the Vehicle:
The Customer agrees that, during the Rental Period, the Customer will not allow the Vehicle to be:

  • a) driven otherwise than in a prudent and cautious manner. A single Vehicle rollover is considered a breach of this condition. A single Vehicle rollover may include, but is not limited to, a Vehicle that has rolled, tipped or fallen over and this has caused damage to the side and/or roof area of the Vehicle in circumstances within the control of the Customer. Customers who have purchased The Bundle (in conjunction with the Liability Reduction Option) or the maui Inclusive Pack will have the cost of damage resulting from an accidental single Vehicle rollover covered, provided that the Customer has not otherwise breached this agreement in relation to the rollover;
  • (b) driven by a person under the influence of alcohol or drugs or with a blood alcohol level in excess of that permitted by law;
  • (c) left with the ignition key in the Vehicle while it is unoccupied;
  • (d) submerged in water, brought into contact with salt water, used in a creek or river crossing, driven on a beach or through flooded areas;
  • (e) used for any illegal purpose or in any race, rally or contest;
  • (f) used to tow any vehicle or trailer;
  • (g) used to carry passengers or property for hire or reward;
  • (h) used to carry more persons than is permitted by any relevant authority or detailed in the Vehicle manual or on the Vehicle or specified in this Agreement;
  • (i) used to carry volatile liquids, gases, explosives or other corrosive or inflammable material; and
  • (j) used for transporting and haulage of goods other than what might be reasonably expected of a leisure rental.
Pets or other animals are not permitted inside the rental vehicles, with the exception of registered guide dogs for visually impaired passengers.

Toll and Traffic Notices and Administration Fees:
Maui reserves the right to charge the hirer for any speeding, toll way, parking or freedom camping fines. In addition to the costs associated per fine an administration fee of NZD $60 may be applicable.

Customer Care On-Road Assistance:
Maui provides 24 hour on-road assistance support. Please contact Maui on free call: 0800 788 558.

Any problems associated with the Vehicle including equipment failure, must be reported to Maui within 24 hours of the Customer becoming aware of the problem (or as soon as the Customer has access to cellular, telephone or internet coverage to report the problem to Maui) in order to give Maui the opportunity to rectify the problem during the rental. Failure to do so may compromise any claims for compensation.

The on-road assistance will cover, free of charge, any technical malfunction of the Vehicle arising from a manufacturing or material fault that directly renders the part concerned unfit for operation during the Rental Period and for which a claim is not excluded in accordance with the terms below.

Claims will be excluded, and the Customer will be charged for any on-road assistance, where the malfunction was caused by the Customer’s actions or omissions, or where the fault is not covered by the Vehicle manufacturer’s guarantee.

This will include any on-road assistance for the following:
(a) The Vehicle running out of fuel
(b) The keys being locked inside the Vehicle or lost
(c) Flat batteries caused by incorrect usage of the batteries and or incorrect usage of any equipment that requires the batteries to operate
(d) A breakdown caused by wilful neglect

Maintenance and Repairs:
Maui will reimburse the Customer for expenditure up to NZD $100 reasonably incurred in rectifying any mechanical or equipment failure of the Vehicle. For repairs costing over NZD $100, Maui will need to be informed and confirm the repair in advance. Repairs will be approved and reimbursement for expenditure will be made (where applicable) provided the Customer was not responsible for the damage. In all cases, receipts must be submitted for any repair or the claim will not be paid.

Unless the Customer has taken the Liability Reduction Option or the Maui Inclusive Pack, the Customer will pay for the cost of repairing or replacing tyres damaged during the Rental Period except if the tyre is defective, and inspected and confirmed by a Maui authorised service centre.

Change of Vehicle:
Should the vehicle booked be unavailable, maui reserves the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification and at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the hirer to a refund.

Vehicle Category:
Vehicles cannot be requested by make or model, only by vehicle category.

Voluntary Downgrade:
Should the hirer decide to take a lesser vehicle than booked they will not be entitled to any refund.

Ferry Reservations:
Ferry reservations can be difficult to manage during high season. We recommend that a reservation is made for a 7.7m vehicle on the ferry, irrespective as to the size of the motorhome reserved, to avoid complications due to possible upgrades.

Shortening of Rental Period:
If a renter shortens their hire period by more than a week - it may be treated as a cancellation of the whole booking and a re-booking. This depends on when the amendment takes place and how many days of hire are being cancelled. Please ensure you always have travel insurance in place.

Cancellation Policy:
The cancellation fees are:

  • If cancelled up to 91 days prior to pick-up No Fee
  • If cancelled up to 90 to 22 days prior to pick-up 10% of Gross Rental
  • If cancelled from 21 to 7 days prior to pick-up 20% of Gross Rental
  • If cancelled 6 to 1 days prior to pick-up 50% of Gross Rental
  • If cancelled on day of pick up or No-Show 100% of Gross Rental
  • If vehicle is returned early for any reason whatsoever no refund is available for the unused portion of the hire

Booking Amendments:
All amendments to bookings are subject to availability of the vehicle and/or package. Different rates may apply based on the amendment made.

Amendments prior to the vehicle collection date will be re-calculated at the flex rate applicable on the date of amendment. This applies to changing the vehicle type, reducing the number of rental days, changing pick-up dates and/or changing the pick-up or drop-off location. Where the number of rental days is being extended prior to the vehicle collection date (days are being added on at the end of the rental with no change to the original pick up date), which applied at the time of the original booking, will apply.

Maui reserves the right to refuse any rental at its discretion.
